The New Addition
Born July 23rd, the only girl in a litter of five puppies — here’s Baby Macalester!
Rachel and I went to see the pups for the first time tonight. Sarah has strep, so I made her stay home with John. We could only stay for a few minutes, as the owners had just gotten home from their lake place. I found out that the pups go with to the lake place, so they’re travelin’ dogs right off the bat! That bodes well.
The pup’s ears are up (way early!) and her nose it starting to grow. She looks more “Scottie” than do her brothers, who look like little bear cubs. Also, she was the smallest at birth, and now is almost as big as the biggest boy. Her eyes just opened up today.
She looked at me, and I fell in love. I sure hope she continues to thrive, grow, and be healthy.
Here’s some photos of the entire litter. If you’re wondering why Macalester is off from the bunch in the initial picture, well that’s where I set her down after holding her.
It took her about 30 seconds to belly-crawl her way over to the main puppy pile shown in the second picture.
She seems very strong and determined too. Sally the groomer may have her hands full, again.
Update: This is also Laddie’s litter photo. I’m glad to have had this photo of both pups from the litter. Carol Anne 8/18/2019
Experimentation

Here\’s a layout I completed for a co-worker\’s retirement scrapbook.
To look at it, it is nothing special, artistically speaking. But I am very pleased with it because … I tried something old and I tried something new.
The old is my handwriting. I worked very hard to make my handwriting “cute” on this layout. Rather than the near-scrawl it usually is. I am amazed that with a little trial and error, I can write something legible. Even when it is teeny-tiny.
A couple days ago, I had decided to purchase an upcoming book, “Love Your Handwriting” by Heidi Swapp (www.creatingkeepsakes.com/shop/item.ihtml?idx=268). My handwriting never kept me from journaling my heart out on a page. But I knew it could be vastly improved. I am very happy with my first attempt here to add some style to my handwriting. I\’m looking forward to seeing what I can learn from Heidi Swapp.
The “new” thing is: I made interactive elements. For those of you who know me well, you will be absolutely shocked and amazed. But the interactive elements became a necessity, when I wanted to add two more small pictures to the layout but wasn’t sure how to do it without overcrowding the page. Thus, the interactive bookshelf was born!
I decided to make the first book and third books on the shelf interactive. This gave me enough space for the pullout and to secure it. Here\’s the bookshelf with all the books “closed”.

Here\’s what it looks like with the first book (“Cooperate with Co-Workers”) open.
Sidebar: I love this picture of Sandy and Carol. They are both camera-shy, but were willing to put their shyness aside to help me make this page for their buddy. Their personalities come shining through in this picture.

Here\’s what it looks like with the third book (“Our Gang”) open.

I learned a some of the mechanics of interactive elements, working on this page. I know what I will do the next time I take the leap to be interactive.
As I said before, this layout is far from beautiful, as beauty is defined in the scrapbooking magazine world. The beauty in it for me is that I had success, and I was able to communicate through paper, photos, chalk, and ink.
I know Velda will think the page is a hoot. In the long run, that’s all that matters.
Good night.
Scotties DO Shed
I discovered yesterday that Scotties DO shed — I have all these short, black hairs on my floor. They’re too short to belong to Sarah or Rachel. Sydney is the only culprit.
And speaking of the culprit — here she is now, at my feet, wanting to go outside at 2:30 am. Cie la guerre!!
Gotta take the dog out.

Color Forecast
‘I ran across this blog article about possible hot colors for the 2005-2006 fashion season. I mention it here because I\’ve noticed over the years that scrapbooking color trends do tend to follow fashion color trends.
Here\’s the link, if you want to see one designer\’s guess:

You may also want to check out your favorite department store here in the next couple of weeks. All the fall fashions and colors should be in full bloom. Personally, I have a hot date with Nordstrom’s Anniversary sale on July 27th…
Now there\’s absolutely nothing that says you have to follow a color trend when you are scrapbooking. But being aware of trends will help you understand what and why you\’re seeing something in your LSS.
If you like the trend, then you’ll know to stock up on supplies, or at least make lots of notes on color combos before the next trend comes rushing through the industry. Trends come, trends go.

The Countdown
781 days until I no longer have to pay daycare. What will we do with all that extra money? Oh yeah, it will probably go to pay our health and dental insurance premiums…

Macalester’s Rose
As I mentioned in a previous posting to the list, we buried Macalester’s ashes between her two favorite roses. One of the roses, a Henry Hudson, was dying — I noticed it the week Macalester started to fail. At the time of Macalester’s burial, I had cut it back to the point where it was essentially three sticks coming out of the ground — the only part of this huge rose that had survived.
I am happy to report that Henry Hudson lives! The rose is coming back strong and has many new branches. Perhaps I will have a rose bud sometime late this summer. I think the combination of rainfall and Macalester’s ashes have helped this bush come back to life.
And there is another miracle — a week ago I noticed a tiny sprout has come out of the ground, at Macalester’s burial spot. But it is growing fast and strong — it is 8 inches tall now, and is most definitely another Henry Hudson. I don’t know if it is a shoot of the main bush, or if it is one of the seed pods from the bush has taken hold.
Seeing these roses become vigorous plants makes my heart glad. You see, about 6 months ago, before she became ill, Macalester walks up to me in the kitchen, looked me in the eye, and said with her eyes, “I won’t be here long”. I told my husband about it, as it seemed so silly as Macalester seemed to be the picture of health. But she was right.
But then, she may not be physically with me, but that strong, stubborn Scottie spirit seems to have become part of those Henry Hudson roses. And she is still with me. When they finally bloom, I’ll bet the roses will smell twice as sweet.
